Thanks to the leadership and generosity of Boston-based Cannistraro company in collaboration with Plumbers Without Borders, Lixil, and Mackenson Picot’s masonry teams in Haiti, installations of Sato toilet units are being retro-fitted into hundreds of pit latrines in the Canaan region of Haiti, which is home to hundreds of thousands of Haitians living without access to piped potable water or hygienic sanitation. The first of these projects serving 200 homes and approximately 1000 people was completed in 2021. The next project of 200 units is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2021.

Plumbers Without Borders extends our deepest gratitude to all the generous volunteer plumbers, apprentices, family members, their communities, our partners, and our industry’s leaders, sponsors, and donors, who made this all possible! We extend a special shout-out of gratitude to Water Mission for partnering with PWB!

Thanks to their quick response and expertise in disaster recovery events, PWB was able to leverage the strength of our growing database of volunteer plumbers, who also responded very quickly and with an enthusiastic willingness to lend their time and skills to help our fellow Americans.

To drive our efforts and ensure success, PWB’s longest-standing supporter, American Standard, stepped up immediately to help fund volunteer plumbers’ travel expenses, as well as to help support PWB’s capacity to respond.

PWB teamed up with Water Mission to help as many people as possible, following the damages caused by the recent round of freezing temperatures and ensuing water crisis that affected more than 14 million people.

The initial and immediate need was for licensed plumbers who could drive to Austin with their truck and tools… and potentially stocked with plumbing pipe and fittings …as there was no guarantee piping materials will be readily available.

Volunteer plumbers were based in the Austin area with recovery efforts managed by Water Mission and their local partner, Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN).

All efforts were prioritized to address the most under-resourced residents with the most urgent needs.

Volunteer plumbers from UA Local 32 and several industry supporters came together to support the construction of family food-growing plots serving the community including many immigrants and refugees, who are now able to enjoy growing some of their own food, while building community and resilience. This project was initiated and managed by the New Roots program of the International Rescue Committee.

A perfect example of SDG #6 and SDG #17 working in harmony! PWB partnered with Engineers Without Borders, NYC Professional Chapter to complete another phase of empowering the local Self-Help Group of Misuuni to construct a rainwater harvesting and distribution system to serve their school and families with safe clean water.

NEDI is a registered nonprofit, non-Governmental Organization based in Kitu Town, Kitui District, Eastern Province in Kenya, East Africa, assisting impoverished water scarce communities to drill wells, construct earth dams, and installing piped water systems for domestic or agricultural use, to increase living standards and empower economic opportunities.
The Nyanyaa Earth Dam (15,000m3) reservoir project, with perimeter fencing will provide the community with piped water to multiple outlets for domestic use, and enhanced conservation for planting trees. A dedicated water trough outside the fenced reservoir area will be provided and monitored for livestock watering.
This reservoir will dramatically shorten the distance for women and children burdened with fetching water from 3.7 miles (6km), to about 1500 ft (500m), as well as reduce safety issues and virtually eliminate water borne diseases from contaminated water.
Nyanyaa Earth Dam is owned, operated and maintained by the communities 1230 residents. The sustainability of the project will be met through income accrued from water sales within the community, with a dedicated account used for payment of caretakers, maintenance and salaries for water kiosk attendance and overall running of the project.

Community development skills of all kinds are needed!

The Community Support Mission in Tanzania, is reaching out for volunteer plumbers to lend their skills and knowledge to help with a Gravity Water Supply community water project. The water source for this project is a stream flowing 1,058,889 liters a day (279,728 gallons). This project overseen by the District Water Administrative Official, and coordinated with CSM and volunteers, will supply water to a primary school, a secondary school, Health Center Dispensary, and to neighboring villages totaling 4,418 people who will be served.

The new water system piping and filtering system will greatly reduce chronic water borne diseases, and provide a reliable and inexpensive fee based water service. This system will be installed and maintained by the community, empowering the villagers to grow sustainable marketable crops and create other economic opportunities, eliminating the danger in unsecure areas to young children and women tasked with fetching water.

The Iringa region project is located within the southern Tanzania highlands, bordering with national parks of Ruaha, Miumi, Seluu, Udizung’wa, and Kutulo God’s Garden. Project is planned for 2018 with a proposed timeline of 2 weeks to completion.

CSM will cover cost of lodging and local travel in-country.

Air travel, volunteer insurance, medical and evacuation insurance, vaccinations and any other costs are the responsibility of volunteers.

EACO is looking for volunteers to help with the construction of 40 boreholes in the rural areas of Mukono, outside Kampala, Uganda, with two boreholes already drilled. EACO’s work is critical in saving lives and improving overall community health, especially by reducing diarrheal diseases, caused by unsafe water. Many families often face no other choice but to send their children to fetch water from wells 5-9km away. An added challenge to these villages’ water supply is that the water from ponds is being shared with livestock, causing contamination and frequent cases of malaria, typhoid, and diarrhea. Lack of safe drinking water in the district of Mukono also affects the economy and the ecosystem. By improving health, boys and girls will have better opportunities for education, enabling them to be leaders in guiding future development.
Vented Latrine pit construction is included as a significant part of the borehole projects, and consequently improving community health, by reducing the risk of contaminating the water resource due to the practice of open defecation. The ventilated latrine pits offer a safe and secure sanitary solution and the potential to provide villagers with compostable soil enrichment material, enabling the development of sustainable agricultural cash crops to market.
EACO could also use your help with research for Donors, and Funding for this life-saving work, which could be done online without the need to travel!

Please consider offering your plumbing/mechanical skills to help United Action for Children(UAC): support and improve the lives of women, children and the community who are suffering from the lack of safe water and sanitation.
Under this project, UAC is actively involved in the development of rural communities through the provision of piped water and sanitary systems with local community members who need the help of volunteer skilled tradespeople.
UAC project is targeting the Mbio village in the Tinto Municipality, South West Cameroon, where 95%of the population defecate in open fields. The prevalence of water related diseases is exacerbated by a lack of knowledge and proper hygiene and sanitation services.
During the past ten years, UAC has implemented community development activities in Buea and Mamfe and has through these activities developed new thinking and practice in participatory community action and community mobilization.
While considering this volunteer opportunity, please be advised that all travel expenses including visa, vaccinations and transport are the responsibility of the volunteer.
